Congratulations on your choice of becoming an
ESL teacher! We hope that you find this
teaching certificate program as enriching as the
other teachers before you that have chosen
distance learning as their mode of program
delivery. Please remember, we are only a

BACKGROUND
Benns offers a 350 hours
distace Certificate Program in Teaching English as a Second Language
referred to as the TESL (Teaching English As A
Second Language) Certificate Program. This TESL
Program is aimed to meeting the needs of current
instructors and prospective ESL instructors who
are representative of the following:

Instructors with experience teaching ESL, but
little or no academic background in TESL ■ Experienced/certified educators who either wish
to update their knowledge in the field of TESL
or wish to change their career paths. ■
Instructors in agencies which deal with ESL
training at all levels and at all ages. ■
Instructors in agencies working with immigrants,
and international students ■
Individuals who plan to become employed as
instructors in ESL program, either in their
own country or overseas.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION
STUDENTS
Twelve assignments
must be successfully completed to be awarded the
Certificate. As a TESL (Teaching English as a
Second Language) student, You are also required
to take eleven TESL courses plus a supervised
practicum.
In the Distance
Education component, the Certificate is designed
to be completed through part-time independent
study (370 hours) plus a fifty hours practicum.
The supervised practicum of 30 hours observation
along with 20 hours supervised teaching will be
marked on a pass or fail basis.

To complete your practicum, you should have
access to ESL learners in a supervised ESL
classroom, with more than five students
attending. I If you would like Benns to contact

practicum we will be happy to do so. In this
case, you will supply us with the name, address,
email of your choice of schools. Please be
advised, it is ultimately your responsibility to
access and complete your practicum hours.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
a) English
Proficiency Requirements
The language of instruction of the
TESL (Teaching English As A Second Language)
Diploma Program is English. Applicants for
admission to the Program whose first language is
not English and who have not studied English
full-time in an English language school system
(one which is located in a country whose first
language is English) for at least four years
must present evidence of proficiency in both
oral and written English through a standard test
such as TOEFL (250 computer score or 550
paper-based score, along with the TWE score of 5
and a TSE score of 60), IELTS (7 overall), MELAB
, Can TEST, YELT, COPE or CAELS (Band 80
overall, with a minimum of 70 in each of the
writing and speaking subtests). For further

b) Educational Requirements
Minimum requirement is a three-year
undergraduate university degree. If your
university degree was granted from an
institution outside Canada it must be equivalent
to a minimum of a three-year degree in Ontario.

COURSE MATERIALS AND RESOURCES
For Distance Education
Students
When your
application/registration has been processed and approved, a course
materials package is sent to you. The package includes the Course
Manual, Course Reader, Canadian Language Benchmarks and one video tape
plus manual. Information regarding the course instructor(s) will also be
provided with the materials. Students will be required to bear the cost
of all telephone calls to their instructor(s) and any courier, e-mail or
postage costs with assignments. The school ships the initial package
out, as well as marked assignments at no cost to the student.
Assignments are submitted according to a specific schedule. It is
important that out-of-country students realize they must meet the same
deadlines as in-country students. The number and length of assignments
vary from course to course. Final grades are based on written
assignments as well as a final practical examination, which consists of
a 50 hour practicum. Details regarding submission of assignments are
included with the course manual and are sent to you as part of the
course materials package. They are also listed in
