OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM IN THE COURSE

  1. PRINCIPLES OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
    COURSE CODE: CORS 113

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Theoretical issues pertaining to the field of Early Childhood Education is explored. Topics covered include: the role of the early childhood educator, responsibilities of both families and centers and quality control issues facing ECE centers.

  2. INFANT & CHILD DEVELOPMENT
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 123

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Principles, theories, research and sequences of child development is explored. Development from conception through adolescence in the areas of physical, social, cognitive, language and emotional development is covered.

  1. INFANT & TODDLER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 133

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Application of child development theories through curriculum design is the focus. Specific methodologies are addressed in order to develop an effective learning environment for the infant and toddler age group.

  1. PRESCHOOL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 143

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Curriculum design based on age appropriate theories is continued in this course, based on the preschool age group. Equipment, play areas, materials and supplies are discussed.

  1. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRAM PLANNING
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 153
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Curriculum development for all age groups is discussed. It is based on the holistic approach of understanding the personal, communication, social, emotional and cognitive development of the infant to after school age learner.

  1. INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY & SOCIOLOGY
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 213
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    An introduction to psychology (the science of behaviour and mental processes) is explored. Influences such as family, race, class, religion and formal organizations is considered as part of the sociology portion of this course.

  2. FAMILY DYNAMICS & PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 223
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Child, family and community relationships are explored. Methodologies that are inclusive of teamwork, family and parental involvement are introduced. Sociology factors of socio-economic status, ethnic and racial backgrounds along with basic diversity issues are also discussed to help develop a solid understanding of the role that the center and family can play together.

  3. OBSERVING YOUNG CHILDREN
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 233
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Observing children, collecting data and sharing data is explored. A variety of collecting and recording methods will be discussed. Communication skills are addressed.

  4. CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 243
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Basic characteristics of special needs children are introduced. identification and assessment needs are discussed. Inclusion of special needs children into the center’s existing groups is discussed in detail.

  5. ENGLISH
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 253
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    A review of basic English grammar is completed. Ontario’s Grade 12 English is the benchmark at the beginning of the program. A review of basic English grammar is completed before proceeding to reading and writing exercises that will bring the learner to the college reading and writing level.

  1. ADMINISTRATION, ADMINISTRATION & LEGISLATION
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 313
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    A comparison of the teacher’s role and the administrator’s role is discussed. Current legislation, social policy and funding practices at all levels of government are discussed.

  2. HEALTH, SAFETY & NUTRITION
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 323
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Observation and reporting on nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, illness, disease, wellbeing, and child abuse is discussed in detail. Current legislation is also addressed.

  3. SCHOOL-AGED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 333
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Specific emphasis on the theories, development of the school aged child will be addressed. Program planning for this age group is also detailed.

  4. POSITIVE GUIDANCE OF YOUNG CHILDREN
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 343
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    DAP (Developmentally appropriate practice) is discussed in detail. Encouraging prosocial behaviors is the goal, and you will learn how to observe behaviors and how to manage anger management cases, and violent behavior cases. Techniques studied will enable you to understand aggression in children to help you in your role to promote prosocial behavior.

  5. EARLY READER
    COURSE CODE:  CORS 353
    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    This course is designed to provide an introduction to teaching language and literacy to young children.  Emphasis will be placed on facilitating reading, speaking, writing and listening development for children between two and five years of age.  It examines how early childhood educators can help children become skilled users of both oral and written language, including a constructivist perspective on language, instruction-based assessment and respect for diversity.
