Benns offers
a twelve week (310 hours) program in Teaching English as a Second Language
referred to as the TESL (Teaching English As A
Second Language) Diploma Program. This TESL
Program is aimed to meet the needs of current
instructors and prospective ESL instructors who
are representative of the following:
■ Instructors with experience teaching
ESL, but little or no academic background in
TESL
■ Experienced/certified educators who either wish
to update their knowledge in the field of TESL
or wish to change their career paths.
■
Instructors in agencies which deal with ESL
training at all levels and at all ages.
■
Instructors in agencies working with immigrants,
and international students
■
Individuals who plan to become employed as
instructors in ESL program, either in their
own country or overseas.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
a) English
Proficiency Requirements
The language of instruction of the
TESL (Teaching English As A Second Language)
Diploma Program is English. Applicants for
admission to the Program whose first language is
not English and who have not studied English
full-time in an English language school system
(one which is located in a country whose first
language is English) for at least four years
must present evidence of proficiency in both
oral and written English through a standard test
such as TOEFL (250 computer score or 550
paper-based score, along with the TWE score of 5
and a TSE score of 60), IELTS (7 overall), MELAB
, Can TEST, YELT, COPE or CAELS (Band 80
overall, with a minimum of 70 in each of the
writing and speaking subtests). For further

b) Educational Requirements
Minimum requirement is
Grade 12 or equivalent. If you have a minimum
3 year
undergraduate university degree, you have an
option to also apply for a TESL Ontario
Certificate. If your
university degree was granted from an
institution outside Canada it must be equivalent
to a minimum of a three-year degree in Ontario.

of the equivalency offices at either the WES
(World Education Services) Tel. (416) 972-0070,
www.wes.org/ca, or any other official,
recognized evaluation services offered
throughout Canada. For the purposes of the
Program, please enter all education on the
enclosed application form.

Grading System
The grading system has a primary classification of A, B, C, and FZ,
which have the following meanings.
A: original work, very well organized and expressed, sound critical
evaluations, clear command of techniques and principles of the
discipline, etc. (90% -100%)
B: good grasp of the topics, accurate knowledge, some evidence of
critical evaluation, ability to synthesize and to discriminate relevant
issues, etc. (80% - 90%)
C: Minimum standard meet (70% - 79%)
FZ: glaring inaccuracy and confusion, little or no grasp of techniques
and principles, trivial and irrelevant treatment of topics, in general,
a failure to demonstrate the minimal knowledge and skills for effective
work in the discipline.
TESL Grades:
Once an examination period for a session has ended, students may access
their grades through telephoning the School. They will be asked for
their name and date of birth.

Promotion:
The following condition apply in the area of promotion.
■
Students will be permitted to resubmit an assignment or a presentation
one time only if a failing grade has been assigned.
■
Plagiarism (defined and clarified on the first day of class) results in
a fail grade.
■

To be awarded a diploma, a student must obtain a minimum aggregate of
80% with no grade lower than 60%.
