Theoretical Foundations of Second Language Teaching and Learning (full
course)
This course is designed to help teachers candidates become familiar with
the processes of first and second language learning. This course will
examine the theoretical research that relates to second/foreign language
s. this courses also examines deferent theories and aspects of language
acquisition and the influential variables that affects individuals
‘language learning processes. Learning style and strategies of learners
as well as theoretical issues related to second language learning is
also discussed in this course.
Additionally, the evaluation of various textbooks designed for ESL
classroom in this course will enable teacher candidates to develop a
better understanding of the underlying learning theories in various
textbooks, the strengths and limitations of textbooks for intended
purpose, as well as familiarity with the diverse range of teaching texts
available in the field.

Organization and Methodology of Second Language Teaching and Learning
(full course)
This course focuses on the practical aspects of second language teaching
and Learning. The issues explored will include characteristics on the
exemplar teacher, history and nature of language teaching, various
methodologies in language teaching to date, developing communicative
competence and communicative teaching methods, lesson planning,
curriculum guidelines and classroom management

Pronunciation and Linguistics (half course)
This course
examines the history and nature of English, the second system of
English, English words, morphology, semantics and discourse. The
influence of first language on second language learning and
pronunciation as well as communication approaches to teaching
pronunciation is also discussed in this course.

Theoretical and Practical Consideration in Teaching Language Skills
(half course)
This course examines the theoretical and practical aspects of
teaching listing, speaking, reading and writing. Activities and
strategies for teaching the various skills are also discussed. The
theoretical and practical aspects pertaining to teaching vocabulary
is also explored in this course.

Testing and
Assessment in Second language Education (half course)
This course examines issues related to language testing and
assessment in the classroom. This issues explored will include the
value and effect of testing, Basics concepts in testing and
assessment , long-range planning, Canadian language benchmark and
its application in the ESL classroom, LINC curriculum guidelines,
learner assessment according to CLB 2000, classroom based assessment,
developing assessment tools and integrating evaluation activities into a lesson plan.

Local and Global
Consideration in Second Language Education (half course)
This course explores issues related to teaching in local and global
aspects in teaching English as a second language. Topics explored
include socio-political and institutional variables affecting SLE,
cross-cultural and inter-cultural communication, anti-racist and
anti-discriminatory education and inclusive teaching practices. The
theory, implication and application of computer assisted language
learning is also discussed in this course.

Pedagogical Grammar (full course)
This course examines the English grammar
and outlines the steps involved in teaching grammar. Pedagogically
suitable explanation of grammar points for various levels of ESL
learners as well as different age groups is also discussed |
Methodology – The Primary School
Level (half course)
The aim of this course is also to raise awareness and improve
teachers’ daily practice with primary school level ESL students.
Discussion questions explore individual themes, Includes topics such
as the language learning environment and language learning across
the curriculum. Discussion and assignments include Immigrants and
Refugee Experiences, The First Day of School, How do ESL students
shape their identity, and others.

Methodology –
The Middle School Level (half course)
The aim of this course is also to raise awareness and improve
teachers’ daily practice with middle school level ESL students.
Includes topics such as the language learning environment and
language learning across the curriculum. Discussion of this specific
age group include the ones listed above; what are the available
support networks for and parents; what do teachers need to know nad
do to support ESL students.

Methodology –
The Senior School Level (half course)
The aim of this course is also to raise awareness and improve
teachers’ daily practice with senior school level ESL students.
Includes topics such as the language learning environment and
language learning across the curriculum. Discussion and assignments
include ones listed above under primary and middle school levels, as
well as questions such as what type of programs do schools off ESL
students.

Practicum (full
course)
This course provides the opportunity for students to observe a
variety of ESL classrooms and experience supervised practice
teaching in a range of ESL classroom settings. Students are graded
on a Pass/Fail basis.
